Manly Porridge

Because this is how breakfast goes down around here - it has to be manly.  All these adventures to fuel, work to do, play- breakfast has to be hearty!  Here is how we do porridge around here.  Enjoy!

 

Set 4 cups of water to boil in a large pot.  Once boiling, turn the heat down and add 2 cups of milk; stir.  Add in 4 1/2 cups steel cut oats, 2 cups peeled and chopped apples, 1/2 cup ground flax seed.  Cook about 4 minutes just barely under simmer.  Add in 3/4 cup coconut, 1 cup chopped nuts {almonds, pecans, etc.}, 3/4 cup dried cranberries, 1 cup brown sugar and 2 Tbsp. apple pie spice. Cook a few minutes longer over low heat, stirring occasionally and adding more milk as you see fit.  When the oats are cooked, scoop into serving bowls, cover with a slosh of heavy cream and a touch of maple syrup.

Clubhouse Grand Re-Opening

 

Once upon a time, when our quiver was only half-full, this wonderful little nook served as the Headquarters of many wonderful boy adventures and business starts ...

Then life kicked in big time with the addition of a few more sons and the little nook served as a great place to store things.  The clubhouse was converted to storage and so ended a fun chapter in our oldest sons' lives.

Enter the last few weeks and a frenzied renewal to get a few projects done around our home and voila' - the Grand Re-Opening of this wonderful little place for the second generation of boy headquarters.

The first order of business?

The swearing in of official members.

Ry: "Tarver, repeat after me, 'I, Tarver, promise to kiss no girls except for Mom. Amen.'"

{Now that's the kind of swearing in ceremony I can really support!}

Out of the Mouths of {conservative} Babes

A true story from the Library parking lot this afternoon.   

Ryland noticed an ‘Obama – Biden’ bumper sticker on the back of a GMC Denali as we pulled into our parking space.  He sincerely inquired, “Do the GMCs roll off the line with Obama stickers already on them since they are made by ‘Government Motors’?” 

I *really* hoped to find the owner of said vehicle inside the library so we could personally ask … imagine, being shamed by a six-year old!!

Will build themselves a hot air balloon, using the most basic of materials.

They were deflated, but not discouraged, to find out that this contraption wouldn't really take to the air.  I admire so much their creativity and determination!  Just one more plug for the freedom of home educating.

{And yes, sometimes these children left to themselves really do complete the well-known Proverb.  I just don't happen to have my camera in hand as often when that happens!}
